Lloydminster RCMP is warning local businesses and the public to stay alert after several recent cases involving counterfeit Canadian currency.
Police say officers responded to multiple reports over the past few weeks where individuals attempted to use fake banknotes at local stores. Similar incidents have been reported in the Edmonton area. Investigators believe some of the counterfeit bills are higher quality than usual, which may make them harder to spot without careful inspection.
Businesses are encouraged to take extra precautions during transactions, especially when handling larger denominations.
RCMP advice includes:
• Inspect every bill and check for a unique serial number
• Review security features such as raised ink, transparent windows and holographic elements
• Do not put yourself at risk. If you suspect a counterfeit bill, refuse the transaction and call police
• Save surveillance video and note descriptions if safe to do so
Lloydminster RCMP says it is working with nearby detachments and financial institutions as part of the investigation.
“Counterfeit currency directly impacts local businesses and our community’s economy” said Sgt. Christopher Byford of the Lloydminster RCMP. “We are asking business owners and staff to stay alert and take a moment to verify bills during transactions. Your attentiveness helps us identify suspects and prevents further losses.”
Anyone who believes they may have received counterfeit currency is asked to contact Lloydminster RCMP at 780 808 8400. Anonymous tips can be shared through Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222 8477 or online at www.P3Tips.com.
For non emergency reports within Alberta RCMP jurisdictions call 310 RCMP.
