Town of Vermilion residents are being asked to continue conserving water as ongoing repairs to the ACE Regional Waterline may extend the community’s current water restrictions into Thursday.

During Monday’s budget planning meeting, Director of Infrastructure and Planning Services for Vermilion, Robert Dauphinee, told council that the regional commission is about 12 hours behind schedule on its line repairs, originally planned to run from Monday to Wednesday.

“ACE has restricted their supply to the town for up to three days,” he said. “Based on current demand, we have about two and a half days of storage, and ACE has been able to push some water through to help top up our reservoirs. We’re in good shape to Thursday.”

The town issued its highest level of water restriction earlier this week and reached out to large water users, asking everyone to take conservation seriously to help extend local supply.

“It’s very important when we do put water restrictions on that all users take that seriously,” said Dauphinee. “Everyone’s effort to reduce use helps ensure we maintain enough water for emergencies like fires or leaks.”

ACE Regional Water is prepared to implement contingency measures if local reserves drop too low, though Dauphinee said he does not expect that to happen.

“We don’t want people to be concerned that we’re going to run out of water,” he added. “It doesn’t look like that’s going to be the case. We’ll keep the community updated as we know more.”
