Good morning border region it is Friday Jan. 16, 2026 and here is everything you need to know going out the door.
Yesterday was crazy for news in our region and the wind caused more issues than most of us expected. Lets get right too it.

In news:
At around 8 a.m. yesterday morning, RCMP advised the dogs involved in an attack were back home and the incident remained under investigation.
A five-year-old girl was killed outside of Bonnyville and her 10-month-old sibling and parents were sent to hospital after being involved in a collision with a prolific offender according to RCMP.
Lloydminster RCMP announced two seperate cases yesterday. One, where they apprehended a suspect after a $130,000 ATM theft and a second where they are asking for help to locate a suspect after a December break in at a business.
Finally, last night, RCMP attended a collision scene on Range Road 14 about a kilometer south of township road 492. Officials confirmed that an RCMP vehicle was rammed during the incident. More information is expected in this ongoing situation.

Commidities:

March spring wheat closed at $5.11 per bushel, down slightly on the day.

March canola closed at $634.40 per tonne, up just over $6.

March feeder cattle closed at $364.55 per hundredweight, gaining nearly $5.

March oats closed at $2.93 per bushel, higher on the session.

Feed barley is trading around $236 per tonne in central Alberta, according to the latest Alberta Agriculture weekly market review.

Yellow peas are trading around $255 per tonne, based on the same report


Energy Stocks

Western Select Canadian Crude closed at 44.84 US on the day.

West Texas Intermediate crude traded around US $59.08 per barrel at close.

Shares of Cenovus Energy finished lower Thursday.

Shares of Strathcona Resources also closed lower.


Traffic:

Highway 16 from Edmonton to Lloydminster is consdered bare, however, roads in the Clandonald and Dewberry areas are snow covered. Crossing the border is a different story, from Lloydminster through to Maidstone is considered partially covered at this hour. Beyond the Battlefords it’s bare with small sections of partially covered reported.
North to Onion Lake, out near Turtleford and St. Walburg you can all expect partially covered roads throughout the area.

In town, on side streets where the city has yet to clear, ruts caused during the warm weather have frozen, causing vehicles to be pulled in directions they weren’t expecting to go. Please drive slowly on these streets.

Weather:
Outside of knocking out the power yesterday for thousands in Lloydminster, the wind also damaged shingles, steel roofs and hydro poles in the city. Today, the wind is not expected to be as high but it is decidely colder this morning with a high of -7 is expected with mainly sunny skies. As of 6 a.m. at the airport, we’re sitting at -11 with winds out of the northwest at 17 km/h making it feel like -19.

The Lloydminster Bobcats are at home tonight against the Camrose Kodiaks before heading to Camrose Saturday.
The 13-1 Lakeland College Rustlers woman’s hockey team in Olds for two games this weekend.
The Bandits take on the St. Paul Canadians at home Saturday at 8 p.m.
The Calgary Flames beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 and the Oilers lost 1-0 to the New York Islanders at home.
