The RM of Britannia has reversed its earlier decision regarding motor vehicle collision response in the municipality.

During the Feb. 25 council meeting, councillors voted to rescind the previous motion that would have defunded the Lloydminster Rescue Squad as the primary collision response provider.

The original decision, which was based on interpretation of a provincial motor vehicle collision response policy, prompted questions from residents after it was reported earlier this month. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency later clarified the policy in response to media inquiries.

The decision to rescind follows the submission of a second petition calling on council to reconsider its earlier direction. Organizers said the petition gathered nearly 400 signatures from ratepayers.

“After reviewing all the information presented to them, some of which was not included when they made the original motion, the councillors moved to rescind the motion regarding defunding the Rescue Squad and the motion passed,” said Warren Callfas, one of the petition organizers.

“It was pointed out in the meeting that it was important to listen to the ratepayers, and 400 signatures was a strong signal to the councillors as to what people were thinking.”

The next step for the RM of Britannia is expected to involve negotiating a contract with the Rescue Squad to continue providing services.

Further details, including the vote breakdown and timeline for contract negotiations, are expected as the municipality releases additional information.
