Election delayed for Lloydminster man in hate-related case

John Charles Reid who is facing three charges under the Canadian Criminal Code, appeared in in court on Feb. 2 and had his case adjurned to later this month.

During that appearance it was confirmed, he still faces all three charges which were laid by the RCMP in early December.

They are:

Unauthorized possession of a firearm contrary to s. 92(1) of the Criminal Code

Careless storage of a firearm contrary to s. 86(1) of the Criminal Code

Wilful promotion of hatred contrary to s. 319(2) of the Criminal Code

The Provincial Court of Saskatchewan has confirmed at his appearance, no mode of trial election was entered, meaning the accused has not yet chosen how the case will be tried.

If convicted, the accused could face substantial jail time. The most serious charge of unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison. The hate-promotion charge is punishable by up to two years, while the unsafe storage charge carries a potential sentence of up to two years, depending on how the Crown proceeds.

He is scheduled next to appear in court on Feb. 23.
