Volunteer and municipal firefighters from across Saskatchewan were recognized in Regina this week for their work during what officials have called one of the most severe wildfire seasons on record.

Premier Scott Moe presented the Premier’s Commendation on Tuesday, joined by Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Tim McLeod, K.C., and Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency President and Fire Commissioner Marlo Pritchard.

“The Premier’s Commendation recognizes those whose actions exemplify courage, responsibility and service to others,” Moe said. “Those honoured today responded decisively in moments of great need, demonstrating the strength of character and commitment that uphold the values of our province.”

“This award is an acknowledgement of the bravery of those protecting Saskatchewan families and communities during one of the most devastating wildfire seasons on record,” McLeod said. “The award recipients are representative of the unwavering commitment and strength that defines this province.”

The program, which originally ran from 2012 to 2018, was revived this year to honour those who responded to the 2025 wildfire threat. Volunteer departments, municipal crews and type 2 firefighters who protected communities throughout the season were recognized during the ceremony. Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency type 1 firefighters and support staff will be honoured at a separate event in early 2026.

“We are honoured to receive the Premier of Saskatchewan’s Commendation award alongside 63 otherdepartments who answered the call during Saskatchewan’s record fire season,” Deputy Chief Gerald Yaremy said.

“This recognition reflects the courage, teamwork and dedication of our volunteers, who worked tirelessly to protect lives, property and communities. More than 500 wildfires burned nearly three million hectares by season’s end, impacting 55 communities across the province.
