Mount Joy Snow Resort is heading into the coming season with some improvements in place, including a major mechanical upgrade and new earthworks aimed at keeping the parking lot drier.
President of the Board for Mount Joy, Dean Peters, said the goal is always to make the experience better for the public who attends.
The first project has replaced the tow rope cable on its T-bar lift, a project that had not been done since 1978. Peters said the work cost between $50,000 and $60,000.
“It was a project that was a few years in the making and was necessary,” said Peters. “The new cable is both a safety upgrade as well as an investment in the future of the ski area.”
The area also brought in a local contractor to address a recurring drainage problem at the base of the hill. At the end of recent seasons, runoff had been flowing from the slope directly into the parking lot – a situation that, according to Peters, had become something of a running joke at the hill.
“A river runs through it,” said Peters. “That is how we knew the end of the season was around, it’s a bit of a saying at the park.
The earthworks aimed to changed the path of that runoff at Mount Joy. The goal is hopefully to extend the season by even a few days. The current season runs around 20-30 days on average based on the year.
