Opinion – Somehow, this was Trumps fault!!

Guest Column by Darrell Dunn, Editor, The Weekly Bean. Ah yes, the emotional journey of Canadians following an Olympic hockey loss to the United States — a national experience somewhere between collective grief, existential crisis, and loudly insisting it doesn’t even matter anyway while aggressively refreshing highlight clips. For Canadians, hockey is not merely a sport. It is a constitutional principle just slightly below universal health care and apologizing when someone else bumps into you. So when Team Canada loses to the Americans at the Olympics, it isn’t just a game result — it feels like the maple leaf itself has

Opinion- From complaining about Quebec, to being Quebec?

A weekly opinion column on the issues of the day from an overworked, independent journalist. For years, Alberta politics has featured a dependable antagonist. Quebec gets special treatment.Quebec negotiates side deals.Quebec waves referendums around every time it wants attention.Quebec somehow bends Ottawa to its will. And, inevitably, Quebec “takes our money.” It has been declared at town halls, at kitchen tables and occasionally in comment sections that show only a passing acquaintance with the equalization formula. In 2025, I wrote a column unpacking that mythology. Alberta does not write a cheque directly to Quebec. Equalization is funded from federal general

Immigration or Control? Understanding Alberta’s referendum debate

In 2024, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith wrote to then-prime minister Justin Trudeau arguing that federal immigration limits were holding the province back. In that letter, she said Ottawa’s caps were “undermining Alberta’s economic growth” and requested “an annual allocation of 20,000 nominations for the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program for 2024–2026,” along with additional spaces to help Ukrainian evacuees transition to permanent residency. Those are permanent resident spots. That was a request for more immigrants to Alberta, specifically economic immigrants selected by the province. Last night, Smith announced a fall referendum ( see full video below ) that includes a question
