Saskatchewan RCMP have charged a Melfort man with second-degree murder following the death of an infant in December 2025.

On Dec. 24, 2025, Melfort RCMP received a report of an infant in medical distress at a residence in Melfort. Officers responded and located EMS attending to an unresponsive infant under one year of age. The infant was transported to hospital.

Investigators determined the infant’s injuries were suspicious in nature. The Saskatchewan RCMP Homicide Investigation Unit, along with the Prince Albert Serious Crimes Unit, took over the investigation.

The infant died in hospital on Dec. 28, 2025.

On Jan. 3, 2026, a 37-year-old man was arrested in Melfort. He has been charged with one count of second-degree murder under section 235(1) of the Criminal Code in relation to the infant’s death.

RCMP say they are not releasing the name of the infant or the accused in the event a publication ban is ordered. Police confirmed the victim and accused were known to each other but provided no further details about the relationship.

The accused made his first appearance in Melfort Provincial Court on Jan. 5, 2026.

The investigation is ongoing.
