Two charged after drive by shooting near Pierceland

Pierceland RCMP have charged two men following a shooting on Big Island Lake Cree Nation that left one person injured.

Police were called at approximately 1:50 p.m. on April 8 to a report of a shooting in the community.

Officers determined a man was walking when a truck pulled up beside him. Two men inside the vehicle were armed with a firearm and discharged it, striking the pedestrian.

The suspects then fled the area.

The injured man was taken to hospital by EMS. His injuries are described as non-life-threatening.

RCMP quickly located a vehicle matching the description outside a residence on Big Island Lake Cree Nation. Additional units, including Meadow Lake RCMP’s Crime Reduction Team, Traffic Services and Police Dog Services, were called in to assist.

Seven adults exited the residence and were arrested.

Following investigation, 27-year-old Damon Kiseyinewakup and 31-year-old Sloane Ochuschayoo, both from Big Island Lake Cree Nation, are each charged with:

  • Discharge firearm with intent, Section 244 of the Criminal Code
  • Aggravated assault, Section 268 of the Criminal Code

Kiseyinewakup is also charged with failing to comply with a release order.

Both accused appeared in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on April 9.

The remaining individuals arrested at the residence were released without charge.

Pierceland RCMP, with assistance from the Battlefords RCMP Forensic Identification Team, continue to investigate.

Charges are before the courts and have not been proven.
