Two Alberta men are facing dozens of charges after an armed vehicle theft early Thursday morning led to a police pursuit and arrests on Red Pheasant Cree Nation.
“We are grateful this dangerous situation was concluded safely with no injuries reported,” said Staff Sgt. Bryce Pender of the Battlefords RCMP. “Due to the prompt and proactive response by officers, the matter was resolved quickly.”
Battlefords RCMP say the incident began around 3 a.m. on April 2, when a driver stopped to offer a ride to two men walking along a rural road just outside North Battleford.
Police say the two passengers then pointed a firearm at the driver, threatened him, and took control of the truck. The victim was able to escape before the suspects fled southbound on Highway 4.
A firearm was discharged during the incident, but no injuries were reported.
RCMP quickly located the stolen truck and attempted a traffic stop. When the vehicle failed to stop, officers deployed a tire deflation device. The truck struck the device before the suspects abandoned it on Red Pheasant Cree Nation and fled on foot.
With assistance from Police Dog Services, officers tracked down the two and arrested both shortly after 3:30 a.m. A shotgun was recovered at the scene.
No injuries were reported.
